The Forest of Reading is Canada’s largest recreational reading program, with over 270,000 readers taking part every year. The goal is to instill a lifelong love of reading. There are programs for all readers from Kindergarten to high school that connect kids to Canadian books, authors, illustrators, and publishers while giving them opportunities to vote for their favourite books.

The Forest of Reading helps celebrate Canadian books, publishers, authors and illustrators in both French and English. There are ten books nominated in each category and students in JK-Grade 12 get to pick the winners! Join us on READsquared and vote for your favourite book for a chance to win some great prizes.

Blue Spruce Award
This program is for young readers from Junior Kindergarten to grade 2. These books enrich their learning experiences with beautiful illustrations blended with fun, interesting, and exciting stories. This is Canada’s only picture book choice award program.
Silver Birch Express Award
This award is unique in providing a mix of fiction and non-fiction for readers at different reading levels, especially for those in grades 3 and 4. If you have an ESL student, reluctant reader, a reader with exceptionalities, or others, this is a program suited for them!
Silver Birch Fiction Award
One of the Forest of Reading’s most popular award programs! Geared towards those in grades 3 to 6, from fantastical, fun titles to serious, life-learning tales, this program provides a variety of stories for readers to enjoy.
Yellow Cedar Award
The newest tree added to the Forest, Yellow Cedar is the consolidation of the two school-aged non-fiction programs (Silver Birch and Red Maple). Readers will learn about real life stories and facts!
Red Maple Award
This program is for students in grades 7 and 8, and encourages Canadian writing and authors. Readers will get swept into these exciting fictional stories by Canadian authors while improving their reading skills.
White Pine Award
This program offers high school readers the opportunity to read the best of Canada’s recent young adult fiction titles. With a mix of stories that are uplifting, difficult, and exciting, teens will devour this engaging book list.
Le Prix Peuplier
Introduisez vos jeunes lecteurs à notre programme de remise de prix à des livre d’images – le prix Peuplier! Ces livres enrichiront leurs expériences d’apprentissage grâce à de belles illustrations et des récits amusants et passionnants.
Le Prix Mélèze
Qu’il s’agisse d’ouvrages fantastiques ou fantaisistes, ou de contes sérieux présentant des leçons de vie, ce programme propose aux lecteurs un éventail d’histoires à découvrir. Ce sont des oeuvres de 100 pages tout au plus, ou des livres d’images plus avancés.
Le Prix Tamarac
Ce programme encourage la littérature et les auteurs canadiens. Les lecteurs seront entraînés dans ces histoires passionnantes tout en améliorant leurs compétences en lecture! Ces livres finalistes font de 100 à 250 pages.
